There are two types of tow-bar coupling methods commonly used they are tow-ball and hitch. The most affordable method is a rigid or foldable rack that clamps onto the tow-ball or bolts directly onto the tongue, or connected directly to the hitch receiver, typically made from high-gauge steel, they can be heavy and cumbersome to handle, the bike is secured and suspended by it's top-tube. Another method is rather than securing bikes from their top-tubes is to sit them on a platform, these platform type carriers can be significantly easier to load, keep bikes at a set distance and minimise potential damage from bikes coming into contact with each other. Many platform bike carriers also include additional lighting, plate holders and fold for easy storage in your car boot.
