Bicycle Messenger Bag Reviews in the Media

Banjo Brothers 2008 Medium Messenger Bag by Dennis Bean-Larson, Fixed Gear Gallery.

"Wow, it’s been almost two years since we first reviewed a Messenger Bag from the Banjo Brothers. While we liked that first bag, it looks like the Brothers took most of our comments pretty seriously back then – for this new bag has eliminated the few shortcomings and added a whole bunch of value besides.

While many people apparently thought that Banjo’s 2,000 cu in bag was too big, we really thought it was too small. In all fairness, we 6’0 guys are going to use a bigger bag than you 5’5 women. You may remember (all of our bag reviews are still on line btw – check the Product Review Archives) back in ’06 we were reviewing mostly 2,500 cu in bags and Banjo’s bag at 2,000 cu just didn’t hold as much stuff as Nils and I were cartin’ around. Stuff like Nils’ steel-toed boots for example. There was nothing wrong with the bag – just it was 2,000 cu in that’s all.

Many more of you may remember when the time came that we reached the conclusion that everyone needed (at least) two messenger bags – one to hold the kitchen sink and another smaller bag for, well, less stuff.

From the moment I pulled this new bag from the box I knew this was just the size for that smaller bag – turns out it’s 1,150 cu in. Just right as a smaller bag for us six footers – and absolutely perfect for the 5’2 gal. And did I say it’s got just the right mix of pockets? Read on.

Size: 17 12 x 6 (my measurements)
Capacity: 1,150 cu in (mfg)
Colors: Black, black or black
Inside Pockets: 2 plus laptop.
Outside Pockets: Four + pen slots
Extras: Cell phone pocket.

STRAP SYSTEM
So, how does it ride? Take a look at 5’7 Andrew. We’ve ridden with enough of these bags to know that this proven over the (left) shoulder bag is going to ride just fine. The shoulder strap is sewn to the bag at just a slight angle, the stabilizer strap can be attached to the bag at either bottom corner so you can use it on the other shoulder or you can let the bag ride lower on your hips ala the Bailery 253.

CONSTRUCTION / DESIGN / STORAGE
Well sewn, waterproof (well highly resistant I’d say, nothing but a roll-top is water-proof), and classicly designed. The pockets seemed to provide a good mix, some zip, some velcro-flapped, and a couple open-topped. Tho, if there’s any shortcoming, none of the pockets fit a CD case very well. Katy’s TimBuk2 computer sleeve for a 15 laptop fit right into the Banjo’s inside pocket. You could probably carry a laptop without a sleeve if you were reckless – but not me.

Other features: blinky light tab in just the right place, reflective piping (but not much of it), that cell phone pocket (won’t fit my Blackberry, but it’ll fit most small cell phones), light colored interior of the bag (good for looking in and finding stuff), and ….and….here’s a biggie – We really like the briefcase-styled top handle on the bag.

COMFORT / FIT / RIDE

As I said, just right. You can’t go wrong with a left-shouldered bag PRICE / VALUE

Price/Value Rating: 5 out of 5.
