Brake shoes generally either have a moulded combined housing and shoe (the most affordable) or cartridge type. The advantages of a cartridge type pad is that the rubber pad can be replaced easily without removing the brake shoe, making the process of changing the pad quick and easy, another advantage is that it's just as easy to change the compound of your shoe dependent on the weather conditions. The harder the compound, the harder wearing, the softer the compound the greater the stopping power however shoe life is compromised.
