Racing tyres are designed with lightweight in mind, the lighter the tyre the quicker the rider can accelerate, a slick tyre surface further reduces rolling resistance. Lightweight generally comes at the expense of tyre durability and it's resistance to cope with punctures although puncture resistant race tyres are also available - these are generally referred to as training tyres.
