26" rims are most commonly used on mountain bikes, however are also used on some hybrid and cruiser bikes which have wider rims than those used for off-road use. Wheel strength, durability and lightweight for cross-country race bikes are important factors in the wheels manufacturer, combined with spoke lacing pattern, rim construction, hubs, bearings and brake type. Wheels designed for bikes with rim brakes generally have machined side-walls for braking performance, whereas bikes with disc brakes will often have a smooth painted surface and require disc-compatible hubs.
