Hubs
Hubs designed for road use are lighter weight than those designed for off-road use, materials used to achieve a balance of lightweight and strength are aluminium, carbon fibre and titanium. Most road and mountain bikes have hollow axles in which a quick release skewer is used to secure the axle to the fork dropout, downhill and freeride bikes have nutted axles due to the extreme demands of their sport. Many off-road hubs are also disc-brake compatible, whereas road bikes hubs with the exception of some touring or commuting bikes, are not disc-brake compatible.
